Excel Programmers
At
ExcelConsultant.Net we are more than just expert Excel
Consultants, we are also expert Excel Programmers. Is
there a difference between and Excel Consultant and an Excel Programmer? Yes, somewhat. An Excel Programmer is typically a person that spends most of their time in Excel writing Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), often referred to as Excel Macros. They write the code that allows Excel to be automated. Think of an Excel programmer as you would any programmer in any language and you will get the idea. An Excel programmer sits in front of a computer typing Excel macros all day. An Excel programmer possibly uses the keyboard more and the mouse less. They are busy typing away.
What is Excel automation and is a button to print several reports in Excel automation? The answer is yes. If you have enable the Excel workbook, meaning you have allowed Excel macros to be run, then the Excel workbook is setup to allow Excel automation. Now Excel automation comes in all sorts of shapes and colors and degrees. Some Excel workbooks are very small and simple, yet they may incorporate at least one aspect of Excel workbook automation. An example would be having an Excel Command button that removes duplicate rows from a worksheet. This simple Excel macro would have a small section of code that runs and evaluates each row. If the row is designated as a duplicate, it will be removed. An experienced Excel Programmer can write such a loop in very little time. This Excel macro would run very quickly.
Most of the work of your typical expert Excel programmer is to write various pieces of code to automate a single Excel workbook. Things an Excel programmer would do would be to write a macro that goes with a Command button that when clicked runs the Excel macro, and the Excel macro may run a set of Excel reports within the workbook, all with a single click of the mouse. Thus saving the user time and reducing errors.
Another example
of the work an Excel programmer
may do is to add drop-down lists that the user selects a single record from. This selection will then manipulate data in the Excel workbook. This can be accomplished by either having the Excel programmer write Excel macros, Excel formulas, or both. An Excel programmer does not just write Excel macros, but also works with formulas in the worksheets and in code.
Excel macros and Excel automation can
also be very complex and could take hours if not days or weeks
for an expert Excel programmer
to write and test. An example would be a set of Excel workbooks that integrate and automate Excel data with one or more Access databases. This type of work could allow a user to manipulate every file and every aspect of every file from a single Excel workbook. This would mean the Excel user would never open any of the other Excel workbooks or Access files. This is an extreme example of what an expert Excel programmer can do in terms of automation. This sort of Excel automation would need to be handled by a very good Excel programmer, a true Excel expert. If you can imagine what you would like Excel to do, the expert Excel programmer can make it happen with Excel programming and advanced Excel automation.
When you think of a 'programmer' regardless the language they are programming in, you imagine someone bound to a keyboard, frantically typing code. That is no different for an expert Excel programmer who sits at a desk and does Excel programming for 8 or more hours straight, never leaving their desk. This is the extreme case for an Excel programmer, because an Excel programmer usually works with the spreadsheet as well as the Excel macros. The Excel programmer often writes Excel formulas, creates Excel drop-down lists, Excel Command buttons, etc. So in reality an Excel programmer may share their programming time with macros and the Excel interface.
In theory an
expert Excel programmer is better at writing Excel Visual
Basic for Applications than a so called Excel Consultant. At
ExcelConsultant.Net we are both, expert Excel Consultants and
