About San Diego
San Diego is a vibrant city in southern California, mere miles from the Mexican border. Several Native American tribes lived in this region for centuries before Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo arrived there in 1542 and claimed the area for Spain. Cabrillo’s fellow voyager, Sebastian Vizcaino, named the port city after his ship (and preferred Catholic Patron Saint), San Diego de Alcala, in 1602. For the next 250 years, Spain and ultimately Mexico controlled this valuable real estate, complete with an ideal deepwater harbor for boats, sunny weather, stunning cliffs, beautiful beaches, and diverse ecology. The United States won San Diego (after lengthy negotiations) in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican-American War.
San Diego is in a prime location for commerce, military strategy, and cultural affairs. The army and naval bases in the city were pivotal during World War II. Until the 1980s, San Diego was known as “the tuna capital of the world,” due to the many canneries and fishing fleets located there. To accommodate an influx of residents and bustling business throughout the twentieth century, San Diego expanded its metropolis from the blocks of Old Town into the Gaslamp District, named for the distinctive lamp posts that lined the streets there. Nowadays, myriad businesses prosper in this urban center. Millions of tourists also travel to San Diego every year to visit the area’s numerous theme parks, including Lego Land and Sea World.
With the opening of the University of California, San Diego and the relative lack of military industry after the Cold War, San Diego has also become a major hub for research. Scientists from around the globe study oceanography, marine biology, biotechnology, medicine, and related fields there.
Today, more than 1.3 million people live in San Diego, making it the eighth most populous city in America. An additional 2 million people live in the surrounding regions of San Diego County. With so many citizens, the area is home to a wide array of businesses, institutions, and organizations.
